"California Calls helps me play a leadership role to our team of canvassers and our community in making them a crucial and powerful force in our upcoming elections."
Hi, my name is Chucho Mendoza from Fresno, California. My migrant experience has taught me many lessons, but more importantly it has given me a unique perspective on life itself. I started working since the age of eleven, performing various types of jobs in order to put bread on the table. I missed half of my K-12 education, and that is what makes me value an education even more.
I have worked as a community organizer for the organization Communities for a New California (CNC), which has exposed me to community organizing and its struggle for social justice. I am also very fortunate to be part of the California Calls Alliance, and have been trusted with running two civic engagement campaigns in the Fresno area. The California Calls experience has exposed me to a great group of young and determined community leaders throughout the state of California. Its enlightening and motivating environment has challenged and sharpened my leadership skills through it grassroots leadership campaign.
There is no doubt that as Californians we are faced with an enormous challenge ahead of us in once again making our great state “golden,” so that it becomes a beacon of light not only for this country but also for the world. Today the demographics of California have changed, and so have the needs its people. It is time to reclaim not only the future of our state but also the future of our working class and our children. As a child, my family and I were always being helped and cared for by neighbors and community advocates; thus, they planted a seed of change in my future. Today, our roles have been inverted, and I now see myself with the duty and responsibility of caring for those who once cared for my family, my community, and myself. It is time for our generation to reach out and plant the seed of change in our communities, in our government, and more importantly, for our future.
